Polishing method follows slab hardness, flatness, aggregate exposure, existing coatings, repairs, joints, colour, sheen, stain resistance, edge access, schedule, and the appearance accepted through the mockup.
Cream finish. Light grinding preserves surface paste and exposes little aggregate, making original finishing consistency important.
Salt-and-pepper exposure. Moderate cutting reveals fine aggregate and helps create a more uniform visual field.
Full aggregate exposure. Deeper grinding reveals coarse aggregate but demands adequate slab cover, flatness, and realistic expectations around variation.
Restoration polishing. Existing slabs require coating removal, repairs, joint treatment, stain evaluation, and test areas before the attainable finish is defined.

Polished concrete develops through multiple mechanical steps. Harrowgate controls the initial cut, repair sequence, densifier timing, grit progression, edge blend, cleaning between passes, and final guard so the slab is refined consistently without hiding its natural variation.
Mock-up and exposure cut. We establish a representative test area with the proposed metal-bond tooling and grinding depth. The mock-up shows aggregate exposure, patch contrast, edge appearance, gloss, and stain response. It also reveals hard and soft zones that affect production rates. Owner and consultant approval sets the visual benchmark before full work begins.
Initial diamond grinding. Planetary grinders with coarse metal-bond diamonds remove coatings or surface paste and flatten local ridges. Tool selection follows concrete hardness. Passes are overlapped systematically and edges are cut with smaller machines. For cream finishes, aggressive grinding is minimized because exposing aggregate cannot be reversed.
Repairs and joint work. After the first cut reveals defects, we fill pinholes, pop-outs, and selected dormant cracks with colour-compatible materials. Spalls receive bonded repairs finished flush. Construction joints may receive semi-rigid filler after the slab has undergone appropriate shrinkage, while expansion and isolation joints retain flexible movement details.
Densifier application. Lithium or sodium silicate is applied at the selected stage and allowed to penetrate. It reacts with available calcium compounds in the concrete to form a denser, less dusty surface matrix. Excess material is removed before it dries as residue. Densifier improves the concrete but does not fill structural cracks or create waterproofing.
Honing and polishing progression. We move through progressively finer resin-bond diamonds, cleaning the floor between each grit so coarse particles do not scratch later passes. A common sequence may progress from 80 or 100 grit through 200, 400, 800, and 1500 grit, with the endpoint selected for the specified sheen and maintenance plan.
Guard, burnish, and protect. A penetrating or microfilm stain guard is applied where the specification requires improved resistance to oils and spills. High-speed burnishing develops the intended finish. Completed areas are protected from construction traffic, paint, adhesive, rusting steel, and acidic liquids because early staining can become difficult to remove from a refined surface.
Final review compares the work with the approved mock-up under representative lighting. We inspect edge blend, coarse scratches, joint filler, residue, aggregate consistency within the slab's natural limits, and overall sheen. Handover includes neutral-cleaner and scrubbing guidance because acidic cleaners and abrasive pads can dull or etch the finished concrete.

Options range from cream polish with minimal aggregate, through salt-and-pepper fine exposure, to medium or deep coarse aggregate. The slab's flatness, finishing, aggregate distribution, repairs, and cover limit the result. Harrowgate produces a site mock-up because photographs cannot predict the appearance of a specific slab.
The number depends on coating removal, desired exposure, concrete hardness, and final sheen. A floor may require coarse metal-bond cutting, transitional tooling, and several resin-bond steps through 400, 800, or 1500 grit. Skipping a step before its scratch pattern is removed produces visible defects at final polish.
Yes, most professional systems include a penetrating silicate densifier. It reacts within the cement paste to harden and dustproof the surface, supporting later polishing. It does not create a topical coating, repair cracks, or make the slab waterproof. Product type and application stage follow the approved polishing system.
Often, but results depend on stain depth, oil penetration, previous adhesives, curing compounds, and patch history. Grinding removes only material within the selected exposure depth. Harrowgate prepares test areas to show what remains visible and whether deeper removal, repairs, a topping, or an opaque coating is more practical.
Construction-joint filling is coordinated after sufficient slab shrinkage, typically later than initial placement. Semi-rigid filler supports edges under hard wheels and is shaved flush. Expansion and isolation joints must remain flexible. Filling every joint rigidly or filling too early causes gaps, cracking, or restraint as the slab moves.
A correctly refined clean floor can provide suitable dry traction, but water, oil, dust, and maintenance products control real conditions. Harrowgate matches final refinement and guard to the use, then recommends neutral cleaning. Waxes or residues can change traction and should not be introduced without reviewing compatibility.
Provide area, slab age, drawings, existing finish and adhesive history, desired aggregate exposure and sheen, joint plan, repair expectations, lighting, fit-out sequence, and access constraints. A site review and mock-up determine tooling, grinding depth, edge effort, repair appearance, protection, and the realistic visual range for the slab.
Many can, but coatings, oil, deep damage, moisture, soft paste, toppings, uneven aggregate, repairs, and low reinforcement cover can limit appearance or require another flooring system.
The approved sequence depends on slab and product, but densifier is applied after suitable pore exposure and before final refinement, with absorption, residue removal, and cure controlled.
