Foundation wall design is driven by retained soil height, building loads, groundwater, lateral support, openings, exposure, waterproofing, and construction access. Cast-in-place reinforced walls suit basements and complex loading, insulated concrete forms combine permanent insulation with a concrete core, shotcrete can form one-sided walls against excavation support, and precast systems suit repetitive conditions with planned crane access and sealed joints.
Two-sided cast-in-place walls. Forms on both faces provide control of thickness, alignment, ties, and finish. This method suits open excavations with working space for drainage and waterproofing. Wall height, concrete rate, tie capacity, braces, corners, and bulkheads determine the temporary works.
One-sided walls and blindside work. Where excavation support or property limits prevent exterior forming, the wall is built against a prepared shoring line and blindside waterproofing. Anchors, walers, drainage, membrane continuity, reinforcing support, form pressure, and the inability to inspect the buried face make sequencing critical.
Insulated concrete form walls. Stay-in-place foam forms create insulation around a reinforced core. Bracing, lift rate, vibration, bucks, sleeves, membrane compatibility, fire protection, and attachment details require coordination. The system remains structural concrete and still depends on correct reinforcement and consolidation.
Shotcrete and precast alternatives. Structural shotcrete can reduce one-sided formwork where nozzle access and reinforcement spacing permit full encapsulation. Precast wall panels accelerate repetitive work but add bearings, joints, temporary stability, crane picks, and tolerances. The structural and waterproofing designs govern selection.
Step 1, confirm support, loads, and water-control interfaces. Harrowgate checks structural drawings, geotechnical conditions, excavation support, groundwater, slab and footing connections, openings, embeds, waterproofing, drainage, and backfill sequence.
Step 2, establish survey control and form support. Footing keys and dowels are cleaned, wall lines and elevations are transferred, and forms or one-sided systems are assembled, tied, braced, sealed, and checked for safe placing access.
Step 3, fix reinforcement and penetrations. Bars, laps, couplers, cover, waterstops, sleeves, service entries, anchor rods, ledges, blockouts, and window or door bucks are supported against movement. Congested intersections receive a defined consolidation route.
Step 4, place in controlled lifts. Concrete is deposited to limit free fall and form pressure, then consolidated around bars, corners, ties, and openings. Supply continuity, temperature, lift depth, and wall movement are monitored through the placement.
Step 5, cure and complete the below-grade assembly. Stripping follows strength requirements. Tie holes and defects are treated, then membrane, drainage, insulation, protection, slab bracing, and backfill proceed in the engineered sequence. Backfill does not load an unsupported young wall.
We lay out both wall faces, corners, steps, pilasters, and openings from survey control. Form systems are selected for wall height, finish, tie pattern, concrete pressure, crane or hand-set access, and reuse sequence. Panels, walers, strongbacks, ties, braces, and working platforms are installed to the engineered arrangement. Corners and stop ends receive added bracing because they concentrate pressure and are vulnerable to leakage or movement.
Vertical and horizontal reinforcing is installed with the scheduled laps, hooks, couplers, confinement, and cover. Chairs and spacers hold the cage between wall faces without relying on loose site debris. Blockouts, sleeves, cast-in plates, anchor rods, waterstops, and reglets are secured against buoyancy and concrete flow. At PVC waterstops, we protect the centre bulb and make joints with the correct tooling so folds, punctures, and poorly fused intersections do not create a leakage path.
Before placement, we clean the footing joint and form cavity, close inspection ports, verify brace adjustment, and confirm the pour rate permitted by the form design. Concrete is placed in level lifts along the wall instead of filling one location to full height. Internal vibration follows the advancing lift and penetrates into the previous layer, with extra control below openings, around waterstops, and inside pilasters. The crew watches form ties, braces, joints, and alignment continuously while the concrete pressure is highest.
After the top is struck and finished, curing and weather protection begin. Forms remain until stripping criteria are met, then panels are released without prying against green corners. We inspect tie holes, fins, voids, offsets, honeycombing, and penetrations. Approved tie-hole treatment and repairs are completed on prepared sound concrete. Membranes, drainage composite, insulation, and protection board proceed only after the receiving surface is clean, dry enough, and accepted for that system.

The engineered form design sets allowable fresh-concrete pressure. Harrowgate considers wall height, concrete unit weight, delivered temperature, workability, setting behaviour, vibration, and placement method, then establishes a maximum rise rate. The supervisor tracks concrete elevation and elapsed time during placement and adjusts pumping to stay within the approved limit.
We coordinate bar spacing and embed congestion, provide hose and vibrator access, place concrete in level lifts, keep discharge near the work, and vibrate each lift into the prior one. Fill is placed in controlled, balanced lifts with compaction equipment kept within permitted loading limits.

Each sleeve or blockout is checked for size, invert, centreline, clearance from reinforcement, water-control detail, and downstream connection. Conflicts are resolved before reinforcing is cut or shifted, and critical locations are surveyed before concrete placement.
Common paths are poorly consolidated concrete, cracked restraint zones, failed construction joints, punctured or folded waterstops, untreated tie holes, and penetrations without a compatible seal detail. A wall may not yet have sufficient concrete strength or its permanent lateral support from floors and slabs. Uneven backfill adds pressure that can crack, displace, or overturn the wall. The design establishes strength, bracing, drainage, waterproofing, and lift conditions required before backfill.
The detail may use cast-in sleeves, puddle flanges, mechanical seals, compatible boots, waterstops, or approved sealants. Location and annular space are coordinated before placement. Concrete must consolidate around the assembly, and the membrane must terminate continuously without relying on surface caulking alone.
