Full-width profiling, partial-depth milling, localized transition milling, edge and structure milling, and fine milling serve different removal depth, grade, texture, and paving plans.
Step 1, The milling plan follows the future paving plan. We mark depth changes, drains, utility covers, curbs, joints, and transitions, then cut in controlled passes and continuously verify depth, crossfall, texture, and remaining pavement condition.
Step 2, Work stage 1. Cores and records establish asphalt lift thickness, underlying concrete or granular, fabrics, and previous patches. GPR or other locating is coordinated where shallow conduits, loops, heating elements, or unknown slabs could be reached.
Step 3, Work stage 2. Survey stakes or machine controls define target elevation and slope. Start and stop locations are sawcut or milled to create straight vertical tie-ins without a thin feathered edge.
Step 4, Work stage 3. The cold planer sets drum depth from a stable reference and advances at a speed that produces the required texture. Water spray controls dust and cools teeth while trucks receive reclaimed asphalt continuously.
Step 5, Work stage 4. Operators reduce depth and speed around catch basins, maintenance holes, valves, curbs, rails, and fragile edges. Small mills and hand equipment complete corners without striking frames or breaking retained concrete.
Step 6, Work stage 5. Successive passes overlap enough to avoid ridges, and profile milling varies depth where the design corrects rutting or crossfall. Exposed weak patches are mapped for separate full-depth repair.
Step 7, Work stage 6. Mechanical sweeping and vacuum pickup remove loose fines. The milled surface is inspected for depth, grooves, delamination, drainage, and hazards, then protected until tack and new asphalt are placed.
Milling follows the contract removal limits, the applicable local municipal specification or named municipal specification, and the paving requirements that follow. Ontario silica controls apply where asphalt is milled from concrete pavement, with water and dust management planned for the actual substrate.
Control point 1. Removal depth is measured at agreed intervals and around transitions, not inferred from reclaimed tonnage. Machine grade control, spot checks, and survey confirm that enough asphalt remains to support construction traffic and the new lift.
Control point 2. The required surface can be standard, fine, or micro-milled depending on whether it will receive an immediate overlay, temporary traffic, or profile correction. Drum spacing and forward speed control groove depth and texture.
Control point 3. the applicable local municipal specification requires milled surfaces to be swept clean, dry, and free of loose aggregate before tack, and lists a residual tack range of 0.180 to 0.360 L/m2 for milled asphalt.
Control point 4. Ramps at temporary edges are designed for traffic speed and vehicle type. Final paving tie-ins use a vertical face at sufficient depth for compaction, not a long thin wedge that ravels.
Control point 5. Reclaimed asphalt pavement is kept free of soil, concrete, garbage, and other contamination so it can be managed for approved recycling. Truck loads are covered or controlled to prevent material loss.
Control point 6. Noise, vibration, water, dust, traffic, and sweeper discharge are included in the work plan. Slurry and fines are collected so they do not enter catch basins or track onto active lanes.

Cold planers can remove a shallow surface texture, one asphalt lift, or multiple lifts in separate passes. The safe depth depends on pavement thickness, machine size, underlying material, utilities, and the rehabilitation design. Harrowgate verifies cores and depth continuously so the remaining pavement is not unintentionally broken or reduced below the planned section.
Milling cuts a controlled depth and leaves a textured, profile-controlled surface suitable for repair and overlay. Full asphalt removal takes all pavement to granular or another substrate, usually where the structure is being reconstructed. Harrowgate uses milling for retained layers and sawcut excavation where deep failures or thin remaining asphalt make precision planing unsuitable.
Temporary traffic can use an accepted milled surface when transitions, drainage, loose material, structures, and groove texture are safe for the vehicle and speed. It is not the preferred long-term condition. Harrowgate sweeps thoroughly, builds approved ramps, protects exposed structures, and schedules repairs and paving promptly to limit ravelling and water entry.
Structures are located, marked, and exposed with reduced production speed and controlled depth. The large mill leaves a safe offset, then a small mill or hand equipment completes the perimeter. Frame condition and elevation are inspected before resurfacing, and unstable adjustment units are rebuilt rather than subjected to planer impact.
Cores reveal actual lift thickness, interfaces, delamination, underlying concrete or granular, and past overlays. Plans and averages can miss thin areas. Core data lets Harrowgate set safe removal depths, identify full-depth repairs, select equipment, and avoid cutting into waterproofing, concrete, fabrics, or embedded systems below the intended lift.
Milled asphalt is conveyed directly into trucks and kept separate from soil, concrete, garbage, and unsuitable material. Clean reclaimed asphalt pavement can be delivered to an approved facility for processing and reuse in permitted mixtures. Harrowgate controls truck loading, route cleanliness, and final sweeping so valuable material is not contaminated or lost.
Milling can remove high points, wheel-path ruts, and selected profile defects when the civil design establishes a new drainage plane. It cannot raise low areas or correct deep settlement by itself. Harrowgate combines profile milling with base repairs, levelling mix, structure adjustment, and new asphalt lifts to achieve the final crossfall and outlet elevations.
Survey, ski or grade control, machine calibration, operator checks, yield, exposed layer condition, and frequent depth measurements maintain the designed profile.
