Heavy-duty paving method follows axle loads, turning and braking, frost, subgrade, drainage, chemical exposure, joints, utility interfaces, surface type, traffic staging, testing, and the operational shutdown available.
Heavy-duty asphalt. Engineered subgrade, granular, binder, and surface lifts serve roads and yards where flexible pavement and phased placement suit operations.
Concrete pavement. Rigid slabs, load transfer, joints, curing, and durable exposure classes serve channelized heavy loads, aprons, and severe turning zones.
Unit and permeable paving. Heavy interlock or permeable systems require confinement, structural aggregate, bedding, jointing, and maintenance suited to traffic.
Composite pavement zones. Concrete at docks, waste areas, bus stops, or turning points can connect with asphalt elsewhere when transitions and drainage are designed.
Step 1, Define vehicles, axle repetitions, turning, braking, fire routes, drainage, frost, pavement design, utilities, staging, testing, and opening criteria.
Step 2, Remove unsuitable materials, proof and correct subgrade, install separation or drainage, and build tested granular layers.
Step 3, Coordinate structures, curbs, concrete interfaces, joints, elevations, access, and production before final surfacing.
Step 4, Place asphalt, concrete, or units under material, thickness, temperature, density, finish, joint, cure, and survey controls.
Step 5, Verify ride, drainage, transitions, markings, protection, and opening strength or temperature before operational traffic.
Harrowgate builds and verifies each pavement layer before covering it. Work progresses from drainage and subgrade through controlled granular lifts, structures and curbs, asphalt or concrete placement, density and elevation checks, tie-ins, and final markings under a traffic-management plan.
Survey and investigation. We establish benchmarks, pavement limits, drainage grades, tie-ins, and structure elevations. Boreholes, test pits, proof rolling, cores, and milling records identify soil, granular depth, asphalt thickness, concrete, moisture, and buried failures. Utility conflicts and contaminated or unsuitable material are resolved before production paving.
Excavation and subgrade improvement. Failed pavement and base are removed to the designed depth. Yielding subgrade is undercut and replaced, dried, stabilized, or reinforced under geotechnical direction. The surface is shaped for drainage and compacted at suitable moisture. Geotextile or geogrid is placed without wrinkles and covered before construction traffic damages it.
Drainage and granular structure. Subdrains, outlets, catch basins, maintenance holes, and culverts are installed or adjusted before final base. Granular subbase and base meeting OPSS requirements are placed in controlled lifts, moisture-conditioned, graded, and compacted. Density, proof roll, and elevations are accepted before asphalt or concrete hides the work.
Asphalt paving. Tack coat bonds asphalt layers and vertical faces. Mix is delivered hot enough for placement and compaction, transferred without segregation, and laid continuously where possible. Roller pattern follows temperature and density response. Longitudinal and transverse joints are cut or formed cleanly, coated, and compacted while the adjacent mix remains workable.
Concrete paving. Forms or slipform control line and grade, dowels and tie bars are positioned, and CSA A23.1 concrete is placed and consolidated. Surface texture, joints, curing, and sawcut timing follow the design. Cold-weather or hot-weather protection maintains concrete conditions, and traffic waits for specified strength rather than a fixed calendar assumption.
Tie-ins and turnover. Existing pavement is milled or sawcut to a sound straight interface, structures are set flush, and shoulders or curbs are restored. We review smoothness, drainage, density and strength results, joint construction, segregation, marks, and edge support. Line marking follows only after the surface meets the material and cure requirements.
Harrowgate submits survey and quality records required by the contract, including granular density, asphalt temperature and compaction, concrete tests, material tickets, structure adjustments, and marked changes. Final inspection includes drainage after rainfall where possible, joint and tie-in review, shoulder support, clean structures, and removal of temporary traffic controls in the approved sequence.

Heavy-civil pavement is designed around repeated trucks, buses, public traffic, frost, structures, drainage, staged construction, and formal quality testing. It usually has a thicker engineered granular and asphalt or concrete section, stronger joint details, and more extensive subgrade work than a light commercial lot. Actual design follows traffic and geotechnical data.
Reconstruction is required where widespread base or subgrade movement, drainage failure, deep rutting, frost heave, utility-trench settlement, or repeated alligator cracking shows that support has failed. Milling and overlay suit stable pavement with surface deterioration. Cores, test pits, proof rolling, and drainage review guide the decision.
The contract defines density testing by cores, gauges, or approved methods and establishes acceptance criteria. Harrowgate also monitors mix and mat temperature, lift thickness, roller pattern, passes, joints, and visual segregation. Testing is performed across the mat and at difficult edges so weak confined areas are not ignored.
Subdrains remove water from granular layers and subgrade before it reduces bearing or contributes to frost movement. They require correct elevation, bedding, filter material, pipe, outlets, and maintenance access. A pipe with no positive outlet or one clogged by fines cannot protect the pavement structure.
Traffic release depends on mix, lift, mat temperature, ambient conditions, edge support, and whether multiple lifts or markings remain. Asphalt must cool enough to resist scuffing and shoving. Harrowgate stages light and heavy access separately and protects joints or unsupported edges from turning truck wheels.
OPSS materials and construction methods provide useful Ontario benchmarks, but the private contract, geotechnical design, owner criteria, and local approvals determine which clauses apply. Harrowgate identifies the governing specification in the work plan and does not claim municipal acceptance where the project has a different testing or performance requirement.
Provide civil and pavement drawings, geotechnical report, traffic data, OPSS or local specifications, removals, structure adjustments, drainage, utilities, testing, traffic staging, haul restrictions, schedule, and restoration. Harrowgate verifies quantities and proposes the equipment, lift, truck, roller, and phasing plan needed to build the complete section.
Concrete can suit slow concentrated loads, fuel exposure, landing gear, turning, or heat where an engineered rigid section offers better performance. Cost, joints, cure, and interfaces also matter.
Work zones preserve fire and delivery routes, use durable temporary tie-ins, protect fresh edges, and reopen only after asphalt temperature or concrete strength meets the traffic plan.
