Method selection for granular base and subgrade prep follows ground, water, utilities, access, environmental controls, temporary works, material behaviour, receiving capacity, testing, and its required handoff.
Proofed native subgrade. Competent soil is trimmed, moisture-conditioned, compacted, proofed, and protected where the design allows direct support below granular layers.
Undercut and replacement. Soft, organic, wet, frozen, contaminated, or disturbed zones are removed to consultant limits and replaced with approved compacted material.
Separated and reinforced platforms. Geotextile, geogrid, stabilization, working stone, or thicker granular can bridge variable ground and preserve separation when geotechnically designed.
Fine-graded granular base. Specified aggregate is placed in controlled lifts, moisture-conditioned, compacted, and trimmed to elevation, thickness, crossfall, and smoothness for paving or slabs.
Step 1, review pavement or slab design, geotechnical criteria, drainage, utilities, proof method, testing, and final tolerances.
Step 2, strip unsuitable material, shape drainage, proof the exposed subgrade, and document corrections.
Step 3, install separation, stabilization, underdrains, and approved aggregate without contaminating the layer.
Step 4, compact lifts with suitable equipment and map density, moisture, thickness, and proof results.
Step 5, fine-grade and protect the accepted surface until concrete or asphalt covers it.
We protect the earthwork formation until granular can follow, then remove loose, frozen, saturated, or disturbed material and trim to a surface that drains. Proof rolling or geotechnical inspection identifies yielding zones, trench transitions, and soft edges. Approved repairs are mapped and completed before geotextile, geogrid, stabilization, or replacement fill is installed. Aggregate is delivered from accepted sources, checked against the specified type, and placed from stable working areas to avoid rutting or pushing contamination into the new layer.
Dozers or graders spread a uniform loose depth with allowance for compaction. Water is added or material is aerated to reach an efficient working condition, then smooth-drum, vibratory, pneumatic, or plate equipment is selected for aggregate and confinement. Harrowgate maintains overlap and protects utilities, curbs, and structures.
Density tests and elevation checks occur by lot before the next lift. Final trimming establishes crown, crossfall, high points, and tie-ins without segregating coarse stone or leaving a polished surface. The accepted base is kept free of mud, snow, standing water, and uncontrolled turning traffic.

Subgrade is the prepared soil or engineered fill beneath the pavement or slab system. Granular base is processed aggregate placed above it to distribute load, provide a stable working surface, and support drainage or final construction. Harrowgate accepts and records both surfaces because a strong aggregate layer cannot permanently compensate for yielding soil below.
The cause and depth are confirmed before correction. Approved options can include drying and recompaction, undercut and replacement, drainage, lime or cement stabilization, geogrid, geotextile separation, or a thicker engineered section. The design may specify Granular A, a Granular B type, select subgrade, clear stone, crushed concrete meeting an approved specification, or a project-specific blend. Field density is compared with the specified laboratory reference at locations and depths defined by the testing plan. Moisture, lift thickness, aggregate variability, and confinement affect results. Harrowgate ties tests to a work lot and elevation, reworks the full affected zone after a failure, and obtains acceptance before the next layer prevents correction.
Repeated handling, high free-fall, end dumping, long grader carries, and pushing dry aggregate can separate coarse particles from fines. Segregated pockets compact and drain differently. Harrowgate controls loading and dump spacing, spreads in short consistent passes, maintains suitable moisture, and remixes or removes visibly separated material rather than covering it with a fine grading pass.
Tolerance comes from the project specification and the material placed above. Asphalt, curb, and high-tolerance industrial slabs can demand different control. Harrowgate establishes a survey grid concentrated at crowns, edges, drains, doorways, structures, and transitions, then corrects the base without creating loose skin or local segregation. Average elevation does not excuse thin points.
Provide subgrade and top-of-base elevations, pavement or slab sections, aggregate specifications, compacted thicknesses, geotechnical report, proof and testing criteria, undercut allowances, geosynthetic details, drainage and subdrains, utility and structure locations, survey tolerance, source restrictions, construction traffic, seasonal conditions, and responsibility for protecting the accepted surface before paving or concrete.

Proof rolling observes broader and deeper response under load. It can reveal pumping, yielding, bridging, wet pockets, trench settlement, or weak zones that a small density test may not capture.
