Understanding curb repair

Which curb repair method fits the condition? by Harrowgate Group

Which curb repair method fits the condition?

Localized formed repair rebuilds small spalls or damaged faces where sound concrete and reinforcement remain. Partial-depth replacement removes a longer deteriorated section without disturbing the full curb and gutter where support is stable. Full-depth section replacement is used for fracture, settlement, failed base, displaced joints, drainage loss, or extensive salt damage. Slipforming suits long repetitive runs, while hand forming controls short repairs, transitions, radii, depressions, and structures. The chosen method follows curb type, gutter grade, pavement interface, access, and cause.

How we repair concrete curbs by Harrowgate Group

How we repair concrete curbs

Step 1, Harrowgate sawcuts the pavement and curb at planned joints, removes failed sections without spalling retained ends, and exposes the base. Soft or washed-out granular is replaced and compacted. Dowels are drilled and cleaned where the detail requires load transfer. Catch-basin adjustments and subdrain or drainage corrections occur before forms close the work.

Step 2, Forms or slipform equipment establish curb type, face, gutter width, slope, radii, dropped entrances, and transitions. Reinforcement, dowels, sleeves, and tactile-ramp interfaces are fixed to drawings. At radii and short repairs, forms are braced to prevent flattening. Existing elevations are reconciled over enough length to avoid a sharp gutter sag at each end.

Step 3, Concrete is placed and consolidated at the face, toe, and around steel. The exposed surface is finished uniformly without adding water. Joints align with the municipal or project pattern and adjacent sidewalk where required. Harrowgate checks gutter flow while concrete is workable and protects formed edges during stripping.

Step 4, Curing begins immediately, followed by joint sealing where specified. Asphalt is restored against a clean, sound curb face with full compaction at the edge. Sidewalk, topsoil, and markings are reinstated. Before opening, we check line, grade, ponding, dropped-curb geometry, catch-basin approach, and sharp transition points.

Step 5, The repaired curb is released after line, grade, joints, finish, cure, gutter flow, pavement edge, inlet, sidewalk, and boulevard interfaces are accepted.

Which materials and Ontario standards apply? by Harrowgate Group

Which materials and Ontario standards apply?

Curb repair follows issued civil and drainage design, CSA A23.1 and CSA A23.2 for concrete construction and testing where applicable, OPSS where specified, and applicable local municipal requirements.

Curb type, geometry, reinforcement, joints, base, concrete exposure, finish, cure, and tie-ins come from the accepted project details. The 2024 Ontario Building Code is referenced where connected accessible or building work falls within its scope.

Traffic and pedestrian protection remain through demolition, placement, cure, and restoration. Catch basins and downstream systems are protected from slurry and debris.

Acceptance includes line, grade, reveal, gutter drainage, joints, finish, curing, pavement and boulevard restoration, and required concrete records.

FAQ

Curb Repair FAQ

Can a spalled curb be patched instead of replaced?

A localized repair can work where remaining concrete is sound, reinforcing is suitable, geometry is intact, and deterioration is shallow. Replacement is more appropriate for settlement, rotation, deep delamination, broken sections, widespread salt damage, or failed base. Harrowgate removes to sound limits and chooses the method from the exposed condition.

Why does water pond beside a repaired curb?

Ponding occurs when gutter grade is not surveyed, tie-ins are too abrupt, the catch basin is high, or asphalt settles at the curb. Harrowgate establishes a wider drainage profile, checks form elevations, and restores pavement with full compaction. The repair is reviewed as part of the flow line rather than an isolated segment.

What type of concrete is used for exterior curb in Ontario?

The project specification selects a CSA A23.1 mix suited to freeze and thaw and de-icing exposure, including strength, air, water-to-cementing-materials ratio, aggregate, and curing. Harrowgate checks delivery tickets and field tests, avoids adding finishing water, and protects fresh curb from cold and premature salt.

How is new curb connected to existing curb?

Existing concrete is sawcut to a sound joint, retained ends are protected, and dowels are installed where detailed with correct drilling, cleaning, embedment, and alignment. Forms carry the profile smoothly between sections. Harrowgate avoids narrow wedges and uncontrolled break lines that create weak corners or drainage sags.

Can curb repair be combined with catch-basin work?

Yes. If a catch-basin frame is high, low, damaged, or poorly aligned, adjusting it during curb repair can restore the complete gutter profile. Harrowgate coordinates excavation, structure adjustment, curb forms, concrete, and asphalt so water reaches the inlet without an abrupt dip or lip.

How long should traffic stay away from new curb?

The closure remains until concrete reaches the required strength and edge durability for the expected traffic. Weather, curing, mix, plow or truck exposure, and project requirements affect timing. Harrowgate protects curb from tires, delivery vehicles, paving equipment, and de-icing chemicals during the vulnerable early period.

Can an existing curb be changed to an accessible depressed curb?

Yes, under an approved design coordinating running slope, cross slope, clear width, tactile walking surface indicators, gutter transition, drainage, and adjoining sidewalk. Harrowgate surveys the full route and rebuilds enough curb and walk to avoid short steep transitions or ponding at the bottom.

Why do repaired curb sections sometimes settle again?

Settlement can return when weak base, trench backfill, washout, roots, groundwater, or adjacent pavement movement remains below the new concrete. Full-depth support and drainage are corrected where the observed cause requires them.

How are curb repairs matched to an existing gutter grade?

Survey establishes elevations at sound ends, inlets, low points, pavement, and transitions. Forms and grade checks preserve continuous drainage rather than copying a settled or ponding section.
