Which concrete system fits the application?

Concrete is selected and detailed by structural demand, exposure, flatness, finish, movement, and construction access. Foundations and suspended slabs depend on engineered reinforcement, industrial floors depend on subgrade and joint control, exterior flatwork needs freeze-thaw and salt resistance, and repairs require removal to sound material with compatible preparation and placement.

Foundations and structural concrete. Footings, foundation walls, grade beams, columns, suspended slabs, equipment bases, and containment structures follow structural drawings for geometry, reinforcement, concrete class, construction joints, waterstops, embeds, and testing. Form pressure, placing access, consolidation, and stripping sequence are planned with the design.

Slabs-on-ground and industrial floors. Performance starts with prepared subgrade, granular base, vapour control where specified, reinforcement or fibres, load-transfer details, and a coordinated joint plan. Placing sequence, strike-off method, finishing timing, flatness requirements, curing, and early traffic are established before the first truck arrives.

Exterior site concrete. Sidewalks, curbs, ramps, loading aprons, pads, stairs, and parking areas require drainage, slip-resistant finish, accessible geometry, durable edges, and a concrete exposure class suited to freeze-thaw cycles and deicing chemicals. Air entrainment and curing are controlled, not judged by appearance after placement.

Repair and replacement. Local delamination, spalls, corrosion, failed joints, settlement, and impact damage are investigated before repair limits are chosen. Partial-depth repair, full-depth replacement, formed repair, crack injection, overlay, or structural strengthening are different methods. Bonding new material over unsound or contaminated concrete produces a thin cover over the original failure.

Architectural and specialty finishes. Polished, coloured, exposed-aggregate, hard-trowelled, broomed, or coated surfaces need mock-ups, material compatibility, consistent batches, controlled finishing, and protection from later work. Appearance requirements do not override air, curing, or structural requirements.

Step 1, review the pour as a complete system. Harrowgate coordinates structural, architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and equipment drawings. We resolve dimensions, elevations, blockouts, slopes, sleeves, anchor bolts, waterstops, cast-ins, edge details, finish, construction joints, testing, access, and the sequence of adjacent work.

Step 2, prepare bearing and forms. Excavation or slab subgrade is brought to the required condition, unsuitable material is corrected, and granular layers are placed and compacted. Forms are braced for wet-concrete pressure and checked for line, grade, dimensions, chamfers, release agent, cleanliness, and leak paths.

Step 3, place reinforcement and embeds. Reinforcing steel is installed to the drawings with specified cover, laps, supports, dowels, couplers, and congestion clearances. Mesh is chaired rather than left on the base to be pulled upward during placement. Sleeves, plates, bolts, drains, conduits, and waterstops are fixed against movement.

Step 4, complete the pre-pour hold point. Harrowgate verifies approvals, formwork, reinforcing, embeds, access, concrete mix, quantity, truck cycle, pump or chute reach, backup equipment, testing, weather, curing materials, finishing tools, lighting, washout, and protection. Concrete is not ordered into unresolved congestion or an unready base.

Step 5, place, consolidate, and finish. Delivery tickets and discharge time are reviewed, samples are taken under the testing plan, and unauthorized water is not added to make finishing easier. Concrete is deposited near its final position, consolidated without displacing reinforcement, struck to elevation, and finished when bleed-water and setting conditions permit.

Step 6, cure, joint, protect, and verify. Curing begins promptly using the specified wet, sheet, or compound method. Sawcuts are timed to control shrinkage without raveling. Temperature protection, reshoring, form removal, loading, coating, and opening follow the strength and specification requirements. Deficiencies and test results are tracked through closeout.

Every project starts with a review of the drawings, specifications, and site conditions. For structural work, that means the foundation plan, reinforcing schedule, and geotechnical bearing information. For parking lots, sidewalks, and patios, it means the grading plan, expected traffic, and joint layout. That review sets the formwork, reinforcing, and finishing approach before concrete is ordered.

Subgrade is prepared and compacted, granular base is placed where the application requires it, and forms are set to line, grade, and the planned joint layout. Reinforcing steel or wire mesh is placed and supported according to the design, with dowels, sleeves, and embedded items positioned before the pre-pour check. Concrete is placed continuously within each pour section, consolidated to eliminate voids, and finished to the specified surface, whether that is a broom finish for a walkway or a trowelled finish for an interior slab.

Joints are cut or tooled at the intervals the design calls for, so the concrete can control its own cracking rather than cracking randomly. Curing is applied promptly after finishing and maintained for the required period, and fresh concrete is protected from temperature extremes, foot traffic, and vehicle loading until it has reached adequate strength.
