Frame adjustment, top-section rebuild, connection repair, full structure replacement, and new basin installation address different settlement, deterioration, and hydraulic defects.
Step 1, We keep the drainage system functional while opening the pavement, then rebuild from competent subgrade upward. Structure elevation, pipe invert, sump depth, frame orientation, gutter grade, and pavement compaction are controlled together so the repaired inlet collects water without creating another settlement ring.
Step 2, Work stage 1. We survey grate and pavement elevations, inspect the sump and barrel, probe adjustment units, and flush or camera the outlet where blockage or collapse is suspected. Sediment pattern, infiltration, missing mortar, and displaced pipe identify whether the defect is structural or hydraulic.
Step 3, Work stage 2. Traffic and pedestrian controls are established before sawcutting a rectangular pavement limit beyond fractured material. Asphalt, concrete, and granular are removed separately, and excavation support is selected for depth, soil, utilities, and the condition of the surrounding road base.
Step 4, Work stage 3. For an upper rebuild, we remove the frame, failed adjustment units, loose mortar, and unsound barrel material. Sound precast is cleaned, new adjustment units are set in full mortar beds, and the frame is brought to final crossfall and gutter line.
Step 5, Work stage 4. For full replacement, we disconnect the catch-basin lead without damaging the main sewer, prepare compacted bedding, set the precast base and risers, reconnect with compatible gaskets or flexible connectors, and seal lift holes and penetrations.
Step 6, Work stage 5. Granular backfill is placed evenly around the barrel in thin lifts so compaction equipment does not push the structure out of plumb. Density testing and elevation checks continue as the excavation rises through subgrade and pavement base.
Step 7, Work stage 6. We place concrete collar or pavement base where detailed, apply tack to asphalt interfaces, pave in compacted lifts, and seal the frame perimeter. The grate is oriented for flow and safe wheel travel, then the basin is cleaned and water-tested before reopening.

An adjustment is suitable when the barrel, base, pipe connection, and surrounding support remain sound and only the frame elevation or upper risers have failed. Full replacement is required for cracked or displaced sections, failed bases, severe leakage, unsuitable geometry, or broken connections. Harrowgate inspects below the frame before defining the repair.
Recurring settlement usually comes from poorly compacted backfill, water entering through joints or pipe openings, a leaking lead, or a rocking frame that breaks the pavement edge. Adding asphalt treats only the surface. We remove the failed zone, seal the structure, restore the granular envelope in tested lifts, and rebuild the pavement section.
Yes, when flushing or camera inspection shows that the lead is open, correctly graded, and structurally sound. Harrowgate can rebuild the basin and reconnect to the retained pipe with an approved connector. A fractured, offset, root-filled, or reverse-graded lead is included in the excavation so the repaired inlet can discharge properly.
We use survey control tied to the approved pavement grade, curb and gutter profile, crossfall, and planned paving lifts. The frame is checked during adjustment, base paving, and surface paving. Final water testing confirms that runoff reaches the grate and that the frame does not create a bump, depression, or unsafe wheel path.
Work commonly references OPSS 407 for new installations, OPSS 408 for adjustment and rebuilding, the applicable OPSD catch-basin drawing, CSA A257 precast requirements, CAN/CSA-B70.1 for frames and covers, and the applicable local municipal specification amendments where municipal infrastructure is involved. Project documents determine the exact editions and details.
A simple upper rebuild may be completed within a short planned closure, while full replacement with lead repair, concrete collar, and multi-lift paving requires more time and cure coordination. Harrowgate sequences excavation, inspection, backfill, concrete, and asphalt so loading does not occur before the structure and pavement can carry site traffic.
Yes. We remove excavation debris, mortar, granular, and sediment from the sump and confirm that the outlet is clear. Where site grading or landscaping continues, inlet protection remains in place and is maintained without blocking emergency drainage. A final cleanout and flow check are completed before the drainage system is handed back.
Severe wall or base damage, failed pipe connections, unsafe geometry, widespread settlement, or inadequate structure can make full replacement more reliable.
Poor trench support, thick backfill lifts, inaccessible compaction zones, leaking joints, or late frame adjustments can create a weak ring around the structure.
